1831 Lincoln family moves to Cole County, Illinois

1831  Abe gets a job on a flatboat transporting goods from New Salem to New Orleans

1832  Lincoln serves as a Captain in Illinois Militia during The Black Hawk War

1834  Wins an election to the state legislature

1837 Becomes a lawyer

1837  Moves to Springfield, Illinois and sets up a Law Practice

1835  Ann Rutledge, Lincoln's first love, dies. Probably of typhoid fever.

1840  Becomes engaged to Mary Todd

1842  Lincoln marries Marry Todd on November 4th

1843  Lincoln's first son, Robert Todd Lincoln, is born

1846  Lincoln's second son, Edward Baker Lincoln is born

1846  Elected to U.S. House of Representatives

1850  Edward dies most likely from Tuberculosis

1850  Lincoln's son, William Wallace Lincoln, is born

1858  Lincoln vs Douglas Debates. Lincoln loses to Douglas for the U.S. Senate seat.

1853  Lincoln's son, Thomas Tad Lincoln, is born


1860  Speech at Cooper Union on February 27th in New York City

1860  Elected 16th President of the United States on November 6th . First Republican President.

1860  December 20th South Carolina Secedes from the Union. Other Southern States secede.

1861  Jefferson Davis becomes President of the Confederate States of America on February 9th

1861  Lincoln becomes the 16th President of the United States on March 4th

1861  Fort Sumter is attacked by Confederates and Union Troops surrender

1862  William Wallace Lincoln dies at the age of eleven from fever

1862  September - First Executive Order of the Emancipation Proclamation issued by Lincoln

1863  January - Second Executive Order of the Emancipation Proclamation issued by Lincoln

1863  Battle of Gettysburg in July. Union victory send Confederates back South

1863  Lincoln gives his Gettysburg Address speech on November 19th

1864  Lincoln wins the Presidential Election of 1864 on November 8th by a landslide

1865  Confederate General Lee surrenders at Appomattox Court House in Virginia. 

1865  Lincoln is assassinated by John Wilkes Booth on April 14th at the Ford's Theater

1871  Thomas Tad Lincoln dies most likely from Tuberculosis in Chicago at the age of 18

1875  Marry Todd Lincoln is involuntarily committed to a mental health asylum
